COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Decatur Catholic Charities will host its annual Mardi Gras fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Hall at 520 from 6 to 11 p.m. Dinner from Mac’s Pigskin Diner begins at 6:30 p.m. and live music by Sushi Roll starts at 8 p.m.—tickets cost $75 per person or $750 per table.  Now Decatur
  • Decatur Park District is hosting a hiring fair on Friday, Feb. 20 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Decatur Indoor Sports Center (1295 West Wood Street) for part-time and seasonal positions in various district programs; job offers may be made on-site.  Now Decatur
  • State Senators Doris Turner and Sally Turner are organizing Valentine’s Day card drives — to support seniors in long-term care — and they encourage residents to send cards that show older adults they are valued. Cards for Senator Turner’s drive can be dropped off at her Decatur or Capitol office by Feb. 11 and those for the other drive by Feb. 6 at her Lincoln District Office.  Now Decatur

  • The Forsyth Board of Trustees approved measures to convert the former Applebee’s into a Chick-fil-A, with work expected to begin in the spring. The unanimous decision was reached at a planning meeting (Jan. 15).  WAND

  • The Decatur Public Library will host the second annual Student Poetry Competition and book release event at Madden Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. Students from seven Macon County schools will read their poems — with each finalist’s work featured in the new anthology, Inkwell: Volume Two.  Now Decatur

  • State Representative Regan Deering’s Valentine's for Seniors card drive runs from Tuesday, Jan. 20 until Monday, Feb. 9. Cards may be dropped off or mailed (to 419 E. Ash Ave., Decatur) to remind seniors they are valued in the community.  Decatur Tribune

  • ImpactLife will host blood drives this month with Decatur Memorial Hospital and Richland Community College: one on Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at One College Park and one on Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2300 North Edward Street. Appointments are required.  Now Decatur
