COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Young Adults Moving 4 Success (YAMS) is offering Decatur youth safe events and mentorship opportunities. The group hosted a teen night at Skywalker Gym and plans a summer kickball league to strengthen community ties.  WAND
  • Community leaders and families have joined with CREW, a blend of local groups planning a long-overdue safety program to reduce gun violence. The coalition aims to build stronger support for teens and young adults with quarterly planning sessions over the next five years.  WAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local high school and junior high choirs may perform with Foreigner at Devon Lakeshore Amphitheater on Aug. 4. To enter, record a performance and email a link by April 1; the winning choir (up to 25 kids and 2 chaperones) will be named on May 8 and receive $500.  Fox Illinois
  • Matthew Flaten of Millikin University previewed upcoming shows at Kirkland Fine Arts Center in an interview with Byers & Co on March 18.   • Food truck owners in Decatur are coping with rising gas and diesel prices as fuel and propane costs increase. KLC Creations owner Kaylin Cohn said that higher generator and truck fuel expenses will likely drive her annual costs above $1,000—adding strain on local mobile businesses.  WAND

  • On March 18, Clay Gerhard discussed the Park District’s $10.3M senior activity center plan and upcoming community events at Byers & Co, including Best of Winter Stock, the Scovill Zoo Easter egg hunt, and new Devon shows.   • The Decatur Bears will host a fundraiser on Saturday, April 11, at the Decatur Conference Center + Hotel from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., offering live music, dinner sales, a silent auction, and team meet and greet to support the new semi-professional football team.  ABC 20
