ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Severe storms earlier caused power outages for thousands and led to the closure of I-57 near Monticello and Savoy and I-74 between St. Joe and Ogden after a crash and a flipped tractor-trailer—reports also noted structural damage in Champaign County and a tornado watch issued until 7 p.m.  WAND

CRIME NEWS

  • Decatur police arrested Aaliyah B. Reed early March 24 after she allegedly drove her car at her boyfriend during a fight on July 4th, 2022—she is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 9.  Herald & Review
  • Decatur police said a girlfriend pulled her gun on her boyfriend during an argument and fired a shot that hit the wall of her home after he went inside—details remain limited.  Herald & Review

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On March 30, the Illinois Department of Employment Security reported that the unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 4.8 percent in February based on preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics—nonfarm payrolls remained nearly unchanged with a drop of 6,500 jobs while some sectors saw gains. Compared to a year ago, total payroll jobs increased by 19,100 and industry sectors varied with government jobs declining and private jobs rising.  Now Decatur

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Macon County is training election judges to stop double voting after a 70 year old voter received a second ballot in the November primary. County Clerk Josh Tanner said all judges will use a list of voters to check that each person votes only once—ensuring election integrity.  WCIA
  • On March 30, the Decatur Police Department partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and over 200 local agencies to ramp up enforcement for Distracted Driving Awareness Month—officers will ticket drivers using their phones illegally. Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer said the action follows 58 lives lost in 2023 due to distracted driving and urged drivers to set their phones aside.  Now Decatur
