  • Cars and Coffee returns this year — with free events held on one Saturday each month from April to October at 661 E Wood St. in Decatur where car fans can view a range of vehicles, enjoy hot coffee, and support local causes.  Now Decatur

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, fire crews responded at 4:30 p.m. to a blaze that damaged two two-story homes near the intersection of W. North Street and N. Pine Street—evacuating one person from each home and evaluating them at the scene—while the Decatur Fire Department investigates the cause and the Red Cross assists the occupants.  WCIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 6, History of the Heartland offered a $500 Doug Hagen Memorial Scholarship to MacArthur High School seniors who participated in student government and planned to attend college, with preference given to students with military ties. The scholarship honors Loren Doug Hagen—a former student council president killed in Vietnam and awarded the Medal of Honor—and is managed by the Decatur Public Schools Foundation.  Now Decatur
  • State Senator Doris Turner sponsored Senate Bill 1331 to create an Illinois Scholarship Database that would help students find higher education scholarships easily— the bill passed the Senate on April 6 and now heads to the House for further consideration.  Now Decatur

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois DNR warned Decatur residents not to handle wild animals—officials said that interfering with young rabbits, deer, and birds can do more harm than good and may spread diseases like bird flu. They stressed that the safest way to help wildlife is to watch from a distance.  WCIA
