CRIME NEWS

  • Oscar M. McCurry, accused of stealing a deputy’s squad car and pointing a gun at officers after crashing into a vehicle and wielding a machete at a gas station parking lot on May 3, was arraigned Monday on charges including aggravated use of a deadly weapon—he was shot after threatening officers and his next hearing is set for May 28.  WAND
  • Decatur police released surveillance footage showing a thin white man (wearing a black hat, blue jacket, black pants, and black shoes with an orange backpack) who entered a vacant home just before it caught fire on Monday, May 5, on East Wood Street.  WAND
  • Trimarion D. Howell (21) pleaded guilty on May 8 to murdering 65-year-old Darrell Coon Jr after he was shot multiple times on the 800 block of S. Jasper Street, and his sentencing is set for June.  WAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Decatur is holding a free equipment show and touch-a-truck event on Monday, May 19 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Decatur Civic Center (part of Public Works Appreciation Week) where citizens can explore trucks and speak with Public Works employees.  Decatur Tribune
