Good morning, Decatur.

A new Map the Meal Gap study by Feeding America shows that over 143,000 people, including nearly 40,000 children, live in food-insecure households in the Eastern Illinois Foodbank service area, meaning 13.3% of the local population faces hunger.

The study also found that food insecurity rates have risen in every county served by the EIF.

Nominations for the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation Do Something Great Awards (in seven categories) will be accepted until May 23 to honor Macon County residents for their impact.

The awards ceremony (at Millikin University from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) will take place on July 25.

On May 14th, Millikin University commencement student speakers Helena Hashimoto and Anthony Ezeanyim joined Matthew Flaten at Byers & Co to discuss their campus experiences and graduation speech preparation.

The conversation was recorded as a podcast to share student insights.

On May 14, 2025, Ashley Grayned of Decatur Public Schools joined co-hosts Dr. Juanita Morris and Dr. Jeremy Morris on Thee Morris Code — with student Braeden Apholone and his mother, Shawanda Apholone Guise — to discuss his graduation and completion of his program.

A judge in Decatur will decide whether to dismiss a legal bid for an injunction to block the move of Heritage Behavioral Health Center next to St. Teresa High School.

On May 14, Tanya Andricks from Crossing Healthcare joined Byers & Co in a podcast to discuss leadership, mental health resources — and optimism in young people.
