COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of kids played in a baseball tournament in Forsyth Park on the weekend to honor fallen Champaign police officer Chris Oberheim — a Decatur fireman played bagpipes during a moment of silence that added to the tribute. Funds raised will go to Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors to assist families who have lost loved ones.  WCIA
  • On May 18th, State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’ office awarded a $20,000 grant to Good Samaritan Inn in Decatur from a $200,000 fund distributed among ten small nonprofits—this funding will help the organization provide housing, food, and job training services to those in need.  Now Decatur

  • At the meeting on May 20 at the Decatur Public Library Madden Auditorium (first floor), the Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations will host Lacie Elzy to discuss new micro-transit and bus route changes. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. and her transportation presentation runs from 6 to 6:30 p.m. with the public invited to participate.  Now Decatur
  • Decatur Police will increase seat belt enforcement as part of a national campaign running until May 27th to remind drivers and passengers to buckle up (it is the law) and reduce injuries in crashes. The department plans to focus on nighttime patrols due to higher unrestrained fatality rates.  Now Decatur
  • The City of Decatur will collect storm-damaged tree debris from private properties beginning May 27 and residents must bring cut debris to the curb by May 26 while calling 217-875-4820 by May 23 if a pickup is needed—items mixed with non-tree materials will not be collected.  Now Decatur

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tamar Kutz has been named interim president and CEO of Decatur Memorial Hospital and will begin her role on May 25. She has served as vice president for quality and operations since October 2019—experience that is expected to ease the transition after Drew Early’s new assignment.  Now Decatur
