ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Before 2 p.m. on Saturday, sheriff’s deputies and fire officials responded to a drowning call at 115 E. Burgess Street in Oreana when three-year-old Kaseyn Clifton from Decatur left home while his mother ran errands and fell into the pool—he was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead with no charges pursued.  WCIA

  • On May 28th, Matthew Flaten from Millikin University joined Byers & Co to discuss student athletes heading to the NCAA National Championships, two athletes earning All-American honors, and plans for orientation, registration days and the Millikin Film Academy—details shared in the podcast.  Now Decatur
  • Superintendent Rochelle Clark apologized on Tuesday for technical glitches during MacArthur High School's May 17 graduation that kept some families from seeing their students walk. She said the district will hold a second ceremony today + noted that a power outage at Eisenhower High School was quickly fixed so its graduation continued as scheduled.  Herald & Review

  • Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias warned Illinoisans on May 28th that phishing texts falsely claiming to be from the DMV threatened to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges, urging residents to ignore such messages and report scams. His office said it only sends reminders for DMV appointments + stressed the importance of vigilance against fraud.  Now Decatur

HEALTH NEWS

  • Parents of newborns at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, and Springfield Memorial Hospital will receive free sleep sacks and safe sleep instructions to help reduce sudden infant death syndrome—hospital teams will also teach proper swaddling and crib safety as part of the initiative funded by hospital foundations and auxiliaries in collaboration with the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative.  Fox Illinois

  • The Decatur Park District is hosting the annual MidState Cup sponsored by ADM—set for May 30 through June 1 at the Decatur Soccer Complex. Over 150 youth teams from Illinois and nearby states are expected to compete, and families can attend for free.  Now Decatur
