COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friends of Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park and Memorial will hold a scavenger hunt on June 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Railsplitter Pavilion to let families explore nature and history at a park 10 miles west via Old Route 36 — no fee or registration is required.  Decatur Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 9, a Macon County deputy arrested Antione R. Ridgeway, who was on parole from a 45-year drug trafficking sentence, on Interstate 72 with 13 pounds of cocaine—officers later searched two Decatur addresses and found digital scales, a gun, and prescription pill bottles—and charged him with drug trafficking and being a felon in possession of a weapon.  WAND
  • Decatur man Trimarion D. Howell was sentenced to 45 years in prison after fatally shooting 65-year-old Darrell D. Coon in his home on April 15 for a robbery linked to a drug deal — the judge described the murder as absolutely callous and dropped Howell’s attempted murder charges.  Herald & Review
  • A Decatur man was sentenced to five years in prison for his hit-and-run in 2024—he fled the scene when his disabled vehicle struck a bicyclist on N. Oakland, and the victim later died from his injuries.  WAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mueller Water Products donated more than 10,000 antique records and historic objects to the Hieronymus Mueller Museum on June 18. The items include employee records, photographs, a grandfather clock, war contracts, and patent letters that staff will catalog for future public access.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Mark Tonelli from Millikin University received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award on June 18th to record original music in Brazil—his project will feature compositions in Brazilian and jazz styles. He will work with renowned musicians at Faculdade Souza Lima and later collaborate with Millikin students to complete production—expanding the university's international ties.  Now Decatur
  • Millikin University Vice President of University Advancement Rick Darnell joined Byers & Co on June 18 to discuss his new role, community generosity, and upcoming events. The podcast highlighted positive momentum at the school and offered insights into future initiatives.  Now Decatur
  • St. Teresa High School has filed an injunction to block Heritage Behavioral Health Center from moving next to its campus after a parent survey showed most parents are concerned about safety and enrollment. The school warned that the new location could expose students to risky situations while Heritage said the move will take 3 to 5 years and cost $40 million+both sides now have 28 days to file further responses.  WAND

  • Decatur Hall of Fame will posthumously honor former Mayor Michael T. McElroy, known as Tuna, for his service as a trusted city council ally and friend—his induction comes nearly 10 years after he passed away.  Decatur Tribune
