  • U-Haul is offering 30 days free self-storage and U-Box rentals to residents affected by Wednesday's severe storms—this free service is available at five centers across central Illinois including the Decatur location on E. Pershing Road and four in Springfield.  Fox Illinois
  • Farmers markets in Decatur are now open at four locations over three days — each market offering fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, crafts, baked goods and other items to local shoppers.  Herald & Review

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A structure fire early on June 19 at 3:31 a.m. at 446 S. Boyd St. killed one dog and prompted the Decatur Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal to launch an investigation into the cause while firefighters used a transitional attack to control most of the blaze.  Fox Illinois
  • A house fire early Thursday at 3:30 a.m. on Boyd Street between Decatur Street and Forrest Avenue killed one dog and left its owner displaced as firefighters battled heavy flames from a one-and-a-half-story home and rescued a second dog while officials investigated the cause (the owner escaped safely).  WCIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur teachers are leading a new agriculture education training program that connects experts from Chicago to East St Louis—Zach Shields said they are developing curriculum to help schools add agricultural classes. A vocational agriculture program will open this fall at a new middle school so students can learn about food production.  WCIA
  • St. Teresa High School filed an amended complaint on June 16 to block Heritage Behavioral Health Center from turning the old Northgate Mall into a clinic because many parents said they might pull their children out, which could hurt the school's finances—Heritage will hold open houses on June 24, June 25, and June 28 to explain its $43 million renovation plans. This legal battle shows the school is trying to protect student safety and its future operations.  Herald & Review

  • Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias launched a statewide organ and tissue donation campaign on June 19, urging Illinoisans to register as donors & help save lives; the ad series, the first in a planned set, emphasizes that one donor can benefit up to 25 people while 4,000 residents await transplants.  Now Decatur
