- ➤ Decatur's annual Backpack Attack will be held on Aug 2 from 9 to 11 a.m.—2,000 backpacks with school supplies will be given to students from kindergarten to 6th grade at three sites, including a drive-up location at John’s Hill Magnet School. The Macon County Health Department will also offer free vaccinations, dental screenings and lead testing on a first-come, first-served basis. WCIA
- ➤ Due to weather, Scovill Zoo rescheduled its annual Ice Cream Safari to July 27. The event will run from 1 p.m.—4 p.m. and will feature Tillamook Ice Cream stations along with animal encounters for visitors. Now Decatur
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local artist Antonio Burton, known as Tony Picasso, is creating a mural titled 'Practice Flight' for the new Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet School as part of the Macon County African American Heritage Trail—commissioned by the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation Untold Stories Committee. The project, funded by grants from Lumpkin Family Foundation and Healing Illinois, celebrates diversity and education ahead of the school's start on August 13. WCIA
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On July 20th, the Decatur Civic Center parking lot solar canopy began operating, saving taxpayers about $120,000 a year and providing nearly 95 percent of the center’s power for at least 15 years with over 2,600 solar panels — a project with a $5 million cost paid fully by the contractor. The City agreed to buy power at a fixed rate from the contractor who built and will maintain the system — and local energy consultants are planning additional solar projects at the Public Library and William Street Pump Station to boost savings.
