Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 28th of July.
Good morning, Decatur.
🏘️ Community
The Old King's Orchard Community Center is hosting Project Prevent Violence—a two-day workshop with self defense, de-escalation and law enforcement classes after a shooting outside its building less than two weeks ago.
Additional classes such as mixed-martial arts and first aid will continue on Sunday to promote safe, positive community interactions.
Pastor Phillip Cole of Elim House Soup Kitchen is holding a fundraiser to keep his kitchen open until the end of the year as it serves 75 to 100 people a night on four limited days.
He plans to use the funds for a new roof and higher electric bills so no Decatur resident goes to sleep hungry.
🏛️ Government
A U.S. House subcommittee held its first field hearing at the Chez Veteran’s Center on UI campus in Urbana to address healthcare barriers for rural veterans — many of whom face long drives to VA clinics.
Representative Nikki Budzinski said slow internet speeds hinder telehealth access — with 57% of Illinois residents lacking connectivity, the subcommittee will work on expanding service.
🏥 Health
On July 27, 2024, four young women participated in the first Decatur Memorial Hospital health careers internship camp—an event that gave them early exposure to health professions.
Officials released an updated list of cooling centers on July 22 ahead of an extreme heat watch set to begin Wednesday.
