COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mt. Zion Lions Club will host the 44th Annual Pony Express Days from Thursday, August 14 through Sunday, August 17 with live entertainment, carnival rides, food, and special themed activities — including Live Like Jack Day and Wear Blue for Charlie.  Now Decatur
  • Mark McLeod from McLeod Trucking and Kevin Breheny appeared on Byers and Co on August 11 to discuss their sponsorship of the WSOY Community Food Drive scheduled for October 3rd — the drive will support local residents in need.  Now Decatur

CULTURE NEWS

  • Byers Company began its Century Tour by visiting the Children’s Museum yesterday, presented by O’Shea Builders, where speakers discussed projects such as Hero’s Hall and a new climber—local leaders explained ongoing community collaborations via live podcasts.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur Public Schools will begin classes on August 13 and require all students to be registered before the first day to get their class schedules and bus details. The district updated policies on cell phone use and offensive odors (such as the smell of marijuana) and will offer mental health services through a new partnership with Cartwheel while enforcing vaccination deadlines.  Now Decatur
  • The Inc. Spot hosted a Scholar Sendoff—celebrating 10 Decatur students who are preparing for college. The event provided strong community support as the students begin their higher education journey.  Herald & Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Work is underway to replace the old Staley boat launch ramp across the street from the Country Club in Decatur, and the ramp will be closed until November. The new ramp is longer with a reduced slope — designed to prevent boats with trailers from falling off, with about $325,000 in costs mostly funded by the Staley Family Foundation while the city later updates the boat launches at Nelson Park.  WAND
