ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Decatur worker, Kaleb Ogilvie, filed a lawsuit on Monday in Macon County Circuit Court after the Sept. 10, 2023 explosion at ADM’s East Plant severely burned him and caused skull fractures—ADM is accused of ignoring safety measures that could have prevented the accident.  Herald & Review

BUSINESS NEWS

  • ADM announced that it will cease operations at its Bushnell plant to consolidate its global soy protein network. The company said it will shift production to its Decatur facility—ensuring a smooth transition for affected customers and colleagues.  Fox Illinois

CRIME NEWS

  • Decatur Police have issued an arrest warrant for Latonian D. Johnson—accused of killing Dawnette Sigmon and stabbing her children, aged 14 and 16—after responding to a call at 9:47 p.m. on August 20 in the 1900 block of E. Main Street, and they are offering a $5,000 reward for tips.  WAND
  • Doug Nichols was sentenced to three years in prison & 24 months of conditional discharge after being convicted on nine counts, and he must register as a lifetime sex offender while paying a $9,000 fine as his daughter testified in court today.  Fox Illinois

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Farm Progress Show ran for three days at Progress City USA in Decatur, where clear, cool, and low-humidity weather filled parking lots and boosted food sales while reducing the need for first aid — only one golf cart incident led to a hospital visit. Vendors and organizers noted that the ideal conditions lifted spirits and improved interactions, marking the event as a success for local agriculture.  Herald & Review
  • AAA said that travelers for Labor Day weekend will benefit from lower costs for airfare, hotels and rental car rentals — gas prices in Decatur are 21 cents cheaper than last year; the group also urged drivers to check their emergency kits before departing.  WAND

  • On August 29th, DPS Board of Education board member Kevin Hale joined Byers and Co to talk about district plans, teacher shortages and contract challenges—he explained that the district needs more teachers and solutions to contract issues.  Now Decatur

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Decatur Moves microtransit service will launch on Monday, September 8 with a free ride promotion using promo code FREE5 and five free rides available until October 8—vans are fully accessible and extend the city’s bus service for all residents in Macon County.  WAND
  • Decatur Airport received a $5.2M FAA grant for runway and lighting upgrades and an additional $153,126 for wind socks and signage improvements while officials monitor a proposal that may cut federal support to its Essential Air Service. Local leaders and the airport’s director say the funding is timely—though budget proposals could weaken commuter air service— leaving the airport at risk for local business needs.  Herald & Review
