ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Decatur Fire Department responded Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. to a fire at ADM’s East plant on East Faries Parkway — two fire engines and an ambulance were dispatched, and no further details are available.  WAND

CULTURE NEWS

  • Decatur Public Library marked its 150th anniversary on September 9 and will host bestselling author Ellen Hopkins on September 18 to discuss literary freedom and censorship at a free event held at the Madden Auditorium—attendees will join a Q&A session and book signing.  Now Decatur
  • The Decatur Area Arts Council hosted a Soup Can Art Workshop on September 9 to benefit the WSOY Community Food Drive — Emma Morrison and Shani Goss led the printmaking session from 5—7 p.m. with admission set at $25 or a donation of canned goods, helping support over 20 local food pantries.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Illinois residents can learn board skills in the Heart of Illinois Foundation’s Introduction to Board Governance course offered at Decatur Area Arts Council, with classes set for October and November. The course—taught by Bruce Nims for $30—requires attending three sessions on the second floor and limits enrollment to 12 participants.  Now Decatur

  • The Decatur Fire Department contained a smoldering event at ADM's East plant Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. ADM staff told firefighters that a fire was on an elevated belt conveyor — officials said the fire was quickly put out and no one was hurt.  WAND
  • The Long Creek Fire Protection District board voted Monday to shut down its new ambulance service due to legal, financial, and impact concerns on Abbott EMS—issues that may delay emergency response for some residents—despite the service’s noted fast response times over the past eight months.  Herald & Review

  • Memorial Health in partnership with SIU Medicine and Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois will offer free prostate cancer screenings on Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at SIU Urology at 302 W. Hay St. in Decatur — the screenings include a prostate-specific antigen blood test and digital rectal exam, and walk-ins are welcome.  Now Decatur
