COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Former Decatur mayor Paul Osborne joined Byers and Co on September 11th to share his 9/11 memories and outline a busy fall of community events — including the honor for Natalie Beck.  Now Decatur
  • On Sept. 11, community members, first responders and students climbed 28 laps at the Hampton Inn to honor the 110 flights of a World Trade Center tower and remember those lost on 9/11 — the event marked the sixth annual stair climb in Decatur.  Herald & Review
  • Motorcyclists led by Coziahr Harley Davidson rode Thursday in Decatur to honor victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks — local first responders escorted the group to Lake Decatur where community members prayed and sang.  WAND
  • Debbie Bogle of United Way joined Byers & Co's podcast on September 11 to discuss the WSOY Community Food Drive, Caterpillar's campaign events, 2-1-1 services and support for ALICE families.   • Car lovers and coffee drinkers will join Cars and Coffee tomorrow for a free, family-friendly event to benefit PawPrint Ministries — vehicle owners take part at no cost and everyone is invited to enjoy the gathering.  Now Decatur
  • Yesterday, the Kiwanis Early Birds, Golden K Kiwanis, and the Decatur Housing Authority celebrated the opening of the new Little Free Library at the DHA office on E. Locust to offer residents a free way to share books. Residents may donate books at the Children’s Museum of Decatur—boosting local reading for all ages.  Now Decatur
  • Yesterday, the Hampton Inn in Mt. Zion held its 6th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb to honor lives lost and affected by 9/11. More than 10 fire departments, several police departments and community members joined by climbing to the fourth floor 28 times—covering 110 flights of stairs that mirror the nearly 2,100 steps of the World Trade Center—and a memorial ride ended at the Decatur 9/11 Memorial along Lake Decatur.  Now Decatur

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kirkland Fine Arts Center will host Cirque du Canines on Sept 20 at 2 p.m. CDT — the show features dancing dogs, acrobatic trainers and a performing chicken created by Gail Mirabella and Michelle Harrell, while group and senior discounts are available at the box office.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dan Skinner, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Forest Wildlife Program Manager and a board member of Lincoln Memorial Garden, will give a free talk—covering white-tailed deer history, current management and challenges like Chronic Wasting Disease—to help the public learn more about local wildlife.  Fox Illinois
  • Decatur Public Schools met with community partners at the Adopt a School event on Sept. 10 at Scovill Zoo Education Building. Retired teacher Cathy Force and school officials discussed how volunteers can help improve classroom support—background checks are required for all new partners.  Herald & Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The latest Illinois drought monitor shows that more than 30% of the state is in moderate drought as Central Illinois has seen little rain in the last six weeks; timely June and July rains helped corn, but dry August conditions reduced yields for bean crops. Farmer Paul Butler said his beans lost much top due to the dryness and experts predict extreme drought will continue in the coming days — adding pressure as harvests approach.  WAND
