COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Golden K Kiwanis Club of Decatur will sell peanuts as a fundraiser to support over 40 community programs and to honor Armed Forces + first responders. The club also announced an October schedule with presentations at Good Samaritan Inn on October 1st, Scovill Zoo on October 8th, youth safety training on October 15th, Macon Resources on October 22nd, and a discussion with Millikin University on October 29th, meeting each Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Salvation Army on Main Street.  Decatur Tribune
  • Dove, Inc.'s Domestic Violence Program announced a series of Candlelighting Services in October to honor domestic violence victims, support survivors, and recognize community advocates—services will be held across Central Illinois, including an event in Decatur at First Evangelical Lutheran Church on October 7th at 7:00 p.m.  Now Decatur

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tuesday— the marker for the Macon County African American Heritage Trail was unveiled at Dansby Magnet School to honor the Dansby family history.  Herald & Review
  • The Concert Series at Central Christian Church will open Saturday, September 27 at 7 p.m. with Ethan Heinzel, a Springfield native and Director of Music and Liturgy at Sacred Heart Convent, who will perform works by Bach, Chopin, Scott Joplin and conclude with a congregational hymn sing along.  Decatur Tribune
  • On October 3, the 3rd annual Dueling Pianos for Scouting event will take place at the Children’s Museum where Fun Pianos! will host a social hour from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and a dueling pianos show from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.—all proceeds will support local Scouting programs.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On September 23, 2025, Byers and Co recorded a live segment from the new Elsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet School—presented by the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation—to discuss the school’s planning and the heritage mural on the African American Heritage Trail. School leaders and community partners explained how the facility will serve students and host new academic programs.  Now Decatur
  • Students at Maroa-Forsyth High School witnessed a crash reenactment yesterday as part of a lesson on the dangers of impaired and distracted driving—emergency responders and actors simulated a scenario where a drunk driver caused a fatal accident. The exercise drove home the serious impact of unsafe driving choices.  WAND
  • The Decatur Public School Board reviewed its international teacher program that brought 36 new teachers to DPS61 and provided them with professional training. Parents and teachers reported Tuesday night that the program helped students learn about new cultures and meet staffing needs in core and special education classes.  WAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Outgoing city manager Tim Gleason said that one council member's actions breached his employment agreement when he resigned on Sept.12—he will leave on Oct.31. Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe said councilmember David Horn created a toxic work environment, and the council will soon choose an interim city manager.  WAND

  • The Macon County Health Department will host a free car seat check event on Friday, September 26 from 9:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m. at its Decatur facility at 1221 E. Condit Street as part of Child Passenger Safety Week to help parents ensure proper child safety in vehicles.  Now Decatur

SPORTS NEWS

  • History of the Heartland will host its annual Play Ball! Sports Card and Memorabilia Show on October 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Decatur Civic Center (1 Gary Anderson Plaza).
