  • Macon Resources, Inc. will host its annual Speak Up — Speak Out Summit: 'We Are Advocates' on Friday, October 24, where self-advocates, service providers and educators meet for interactive workshops, inspiring speakers and hands-on activities to build inclusion and empowerment. The event aims to highlight rights and independent living with local and statewide organizations.  Now Decatur
  • The United Way fall fundraiser Dine United is underway in Decatur with local restaurants donating a percentage of sales from now through November to support United Way & community efforts. Participants can visit establishments such as Coffee Connection and Del Carmens to enjoy lunch and help a longstanding local cause.  Now Decatur
  • The Early Bird Kiwanis Club in Decatur will start its annual cheese sale on November 6, selling about 2-lb wheels of Colby, Colby jack, Pepper jack, Swiss and a mix of four cheeses for $17 plus cheddar chunks or horseradish-cheddar spread for $14 until they run out—fundraising to help more than twenty local charities.  Now Decatur

  • On October 21, 2025, Natalie Beck from the Heart of Illinois Community Foundation and Julia Livingston joined Byers + Co to discuss the Untold Stories project and plan the next historical marker on the Macon County African American Heritage Trail. The podcast highlighted new efforts to document local African American history+ and set future steps for the trail.  Now Decatur

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Treasury Department will stop minting new pennies early next year, so local banks and businesses are changing how they handle money by rounding totals and urging card payments—some stores already show signs of coin shortages. Bank experts say non-customers may soon have trouble cashing checks because pennies will no longer be available.  Fox Illinois

HEALTH NEWS

  • SIU Medicine is opening a new clinic on the Memorial Campus in Decatur to combine offices for Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Pediatrics into one facility. The consolidation will finish by Oct. 27 and renovations for surgical services on the third floor will start on Nov. 1 — the clinic is located off Monroe Street on the Memorial Hospital campus.  WAND
  • A drive-through flu clinic will operate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 at 1221 E. Condit St on a first-come, first-served basis—Macon County Health Department organized the event to offer flu vaccinations.  Herald & Review
