COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations will hold its final regular meeting of 2025 on November 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the Staley Room at the Decatur Public Library (130 North Franklin Street) where residents can also learn about upcoming December business meetings, elections, and a Christmas party for members.  Decatur Tribune
  • On November 12th, Macon Resources asked local businesses and individuals to join its Secret Santa program to gift over 80 people with developmental disabilities living in group homes and independently—participants may buy gifts with at least a $50 spend per person or donate funds to have gifts purchased on their behalf. Unwrapped gifts must be delivered by December 4th.  Now Decatur
  • The Salvation Army opened its Cold Cot program yesterday to add extra cots at the men’s shelter and help men avoid dangerous cold weather — the men check in at 5:00 p.m. for a meal and hot shower. The program will run through winter until early spring when warmer temperatures return — each man is invited to access additional shelter services.  Now Decatur
  • Operation Enduring Support is collecting donations at Grace Methodist Church in Decatur to send care packages with snacks, hygiene supplies and holiday items to U.S. service members overseas. The drive accepts items, military addresses and financial contributions for shipping until November 20.  Now Decatur

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, November 11, the Decatur Fire Department responded to a building fire at 1702 East Clay Street (at approximately 12:19 p.m.) and quickly contained the blaze (with no injuries reported) through coordinated efforts.  ABC 20

  • Clay Gerhard from the Decatur Park District joined Byers & Co on November 12 to discuss community events like Trees on the Tees, the Santa Shuffle at the DISC, and an Afternoon with Santa at Scovill Zoo—he also mentioned that country star Sara Evans will perform at the Devon soon.  Now Decatur
  • On November 12, 2025, Matthew Flaten of Millikin University joined Byers & Co to discuss upcoming holiday shows at campus—featuring performances of The Tempest and Vespers.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur Public Schools will require 24 credits to graduate instead of 22 for the Class of 2028 & students must earn the extra credits to finish school.  Herald & Review

  • Central Illinois residents saw the rare Northern Lights light up the night sky Tuesday evening and sent in photos that show the dazzling colors—capturing a unique natural wonder.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Crossing Healthcare opened its Rapid Care walk-in clinic on the Decatur Memorial Hospital campus at 575 West Hay Street on November 12 to treat non-emergency illnesses and injuries such as colds, cuts, and minor sprains—no appointment is needed and it is open Monday–Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.  Now Decatur
  • Yesterday, DMH CEO Tanya Andricks and interventional cardiologist Dr. Adebola Orekoya joined Byers & Co to explain how they diagnose and treat heart and blood vessel conditions through minimally invasive procedures—discussing the approach on a podcast.  Now Decatur
  • The Illinois Department of Public Health warned parents today to stop using ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula after two Illinois infants and at least 15 cases across 12 states were linked to botulism. Parents are advised to throw the product away or return it for a refund (and keep any unused portion for testing), to help prevent further risk.  WAND

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Mechanic Lindsey Kreher from South Sore Auto Services said drivers should switch to winter washer fluid with antifreeze, check their battery cold cranking amps and keep an emergency kit with a phone charger, shovel and sand. She warned that lower tire pressure and more deer activity will raise accident risks—making these steps key to avoiding costly repairs.  WAND
