COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mt Zion Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Expo & Taste on Saturday, April 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Mt Zion Convention Center. The event offers free admission—taste tickets cost $8 for five while exhibitors, stage shows, and prize drawings add to the family-friendly activities.  Now Decatur

CRIME NEWS

  • A Decatur man told police he heard ten to fifteen gunshots between 7:50 p.m. and 8:13 p.m. Thursday on West Johnson Avenue—bullets ricocheted off a fence and trees near his yard.  Herald & Review
  • Police reported that concrete chunks were thrown at cars on Decatur street — no injuries were reported on East Faries Parkway — in the reported incidents.  Herald & Review

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security, Decatur’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 6.7 percent in January last year to 6.0 percent this January. Nonfarm employment declined by 300 jobs to 46,400 and some sectors, such as education and health and mining and construction, added jobs while others lost ground.  Now Decatur

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Richland Community College reported a 9.1% rise in spring enrollment on March 23 with over 2,500 students, including more than 1,000 dual credit enrollees and nearly 600 in career and technical programs—most taking courses part-time. The college works with Decatur Public Schools District #61 to boost dual credit opportunities, with the first Prep Academy cohort set to graduate this year.  Now Decatur
  • The Children's Museum of Illinois will host two Spring Break Camps for different age groups—in one camp, kindergarten to second-grade kids will have hands-on STEAM activities on Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26, while in another, third to fifth graders will join sessions on Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28; camps run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and cost $20 per day for nonmembers and $18 per day for members.  Now Decatur

  • On March 23rd, Illinois lawmakers signed House Bill 4439 that made the soybean the official state bean. State Senator Doris Turner (who said Decatur is the soybean capital of the world) said the law will show how soybeans help farming and create jobs.  Now Decatur
